CS150 Introduction to Computers:
Introduction to personal computers including professional office
CS233 Microcomputer Database design and Administration
This class starts with a general discussion of data storage and moves into
the justification of DBMS systems. The importance of the DBA reporting to the
CEO to guarantee centralized DBMS control is compared to the medieval battles of
kings and his nobles. The students review CS150 introduction to Microsoft
Access as a component of Professional Office that adds heterogeneous data access
of other DBMS for data modeling using Open DataBase Connectivity (ODBC). Also
included is Microsoft Component Object Model (COM) which includes Object Linking
and Embedding (OLE) and Automation in Visual Basic. The student is introduced
to normalized schema design, navigability and ER diagrams. The student then
practices the construction of SQL, including defining tables, views, triggers,
and queries. A discussion of administrative responsibly, security, distributed
concurrency control, and methods to keep the work process under control ends the
class.
